Why Does Arch Support Matter?

Arch support matters because it changes where your weight lands. Put the support in the right place and pressure moves away from sore spots under the ball of the foot, which is often the difference between a sandal you tolerate and one you can wear all day.

We asked Caitlin from Custom Podiatry to join Janice on the shop floor and explain why. She used one of our favourite summer styles, the Josef Seibel Estelle 04 Titan Combi Sandals, to show what good support actually looks like inside a sandal.

How raised arch support redistributes pressure

A flat sandal leaves the ball of the foot to carry most of the load. With every step, the small bones and nerves at the front of the foot take a pounding, and there is nothing underneath to share it.

A raised arch, paired with a small metatarsal dome just behind the ball of the foot, spreads that load across a larger area. As Caitlin explains, the dome helps "basically open the forefoot". It lifts and gently separates the metatarsal bones, easing pressure on the tissue between them.

Caitlin compared this with a basic flat thong: "no support whatsoever". In a footbed with proper contouring, the cushioning sits exactly where the foot needs it, rather than being spread thinly across a flat sole.

Who it helps most

The right support is especially useful for people dealing with forefoot and arch pain. Caitlin singled out four common concerns.

  • Morton's neuroma: burning, tingling or a "pebble in the shoe" feeling between the toes. The metatarsal dome opens the forefoot, taking pressure off the irritated nerve.
  • Capsulitis: aching and swelling at the base of the second toe. Load is shifted back from the inflamed joint onto the arch.
  • Metatarsalgia: general pain and burning under the ball of the foot, sometimes with callus. Pressure is spread evenly instead of concentrated in one spot.
  • Fallen arches: tired, achy feet and strain through the arch and heel. A raised arch gives the foot a contour to rest on.

Caitlin also noted that people who get callus under the ball of the foot are often showing the same pressure pattern. A footbed that lifts the forefoot "will just help lift up" that area and ease the load.

Every foot is different. If you have ongoing pain, see a podiatrist for a proper assessment before relying on footwear alone.

The Estelle 04 shows how much support can fit into a sandal that still looks easy and summery. Caitlin's verdict once she had it in her hands: "that's gold".

  • Contoured arch: the footbed rises under the arch so the foot is supported along its length, not just at the heel and toes.
  • Metatarsal dome: a subtle raised area behind the ball of the foot, the feature Caitlin highlights for neuromas and capsulitis.
  • Cushioning where it counts: padding sits under the high-pressure zones rather than being spread evenly across a flat sole.
  • Removable footbed: "the whole thing actually can be removed". If the built-in support isn't quite in the right place for your foot, there is room to adjust it, or to swap in a custom orthotic.
  • Adjustable straps: multiple hook-and-loop straps let you fine-tune the fit, which matters if your feet swell during the day.
  • Lightweight platform sole: easy on the legs for walking, travelling and long summer days.

That removable footbed is the detail that impressed Caitlin most. It means one sandal can work for a wider range of feet, including people who already wear orthotics.

Find your fit

Comfort starts with what is under your foot, not just how a sandal looks. As Janice joked with Caitlin, there's a reason we don't stock the flat, unsupportive kind: we only sell good shoes.
